September 27, 2009, Bjj Detroit. Mash Gym students dominate the biggest Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament in Michigan-- the Michigan Open. Mash students earned over ten medals.
August 2009: Mash Gym students after just over a year of training have their first amateur cage fight. Many who train at Mash Gym cheered on the guys they roll with-- all to victory. Ryan, a heavy weight, TKO'ed his opponent so quickly the promoter offered another opponent and fight; Ryan accepted and won that fight too in the first round. Eric S. won his fight in the first round by arm triangle. Sean 'boble head' Powers fought a tough, great fight to a unanimous decision.
July 2009: Carlos Caique Elias (Professor Caique) visited his affiliate location-- Mash Gym and taught a two hour Brazilian Jiu Jitsu seminar. Professor Caique is a world-renown 7th degree Red and Black Belt. There are only a handful in the world. Carlos is one of the few Black Belts of the old Gracie Academy in Brazil. This is when Helio Gracie and his sons were all together under the same roof in the same academy. It has been said that Prof Caique was the best student there for many years.
June 2009: We are especially proud of the women that train at Mash Gym. Our muay thai classes has the most female participants. Two women specifically come to mind when we think about our jiu jitsu classes. They are Ericka Boddie and Heather Morrison. Heather even takes the MMA classes and has shown interest in an amateur cage fight!
